Trout Unlimited’s Conservation Success Index (CSI)

By the next generation, Trout Unlimited will ensure that robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish once again thrive within their North American range, so that our children can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters. Children Fishing

The Conservation Success Index – Keeping Faith with Our Vision

We are often asked whether our projects have succeeded in improving the status of our native coldwater fishes, and at what rate their status is improving. Trout Unlimited has developed the Conservation Success Index (CSI) to answer these questions by assessing and reporting on the status of native trout and salmon from across the country. The CSI provides TU with a strategic tool to establish priorities for restoration, protection, and monitoring at the subwatershed level based on the scientific analysis of population and habitat integrity as well as range-wide conditions and vulnerability to future threats.

The CSI integrates population data from trout assessments completed by state and federal agencies with spatial data on habitat and threats gathered by our staff scientists to create a common analytical framework applicable to all native coldwater salmonids. This approach allows TU to direct organizational resources to the places that are most in need and where the greatest conservation benefits can be achieved. Periodic updates to the CSI will provide TU with important trend information on habitat and population conditions to monitor program success and continue to set strategic priorities.
